Fountains Abbey, a Cistercian Monastery which was destroyed by Henry VIII's men during the Dissolution of the Abbeys in the 16th Century.
The Ruins of the Abbey, a World Heritage Site, are floodlit at weekends during the Autumn and provide an evocative setting - especially when mist or fog decend on the valley. The ruins are in the care of the National Trust and are maintained by English Heritage.
