This old tree is in New York’s Eastern High Peaks Wilderness Area. It has survived the flooding created by beaver dams, and persisted as the pond changed to a wetland, a meadows and now a brushy field. Beaver (or their temporary absence) play a big role in the landscape of the Adirondacks, creating clearings in the vast northern forest.
