These leaf cutter ants were busily gathering leaf bits for their underground garden of fungi food supply in the Peruvian Amazon. The tiny ant riding on the leaf is actually not just receiving a free ride, but defends the carrier ants from parasitic flies. I found them near the Amazon Research Station in Madre de Dios, Peru. April 2008.
