Nikon announced the new D80 today, along with a few other things. Press release here
And HERE are Thom Hogan's comments on this announcement. Obviously, no one has actually used the camera yet, so this isn't a real review. Just some comments regarding what was listed in the press release.
Sounds pretty interesting. Not sure why they went with SD cards instead of CF, but this could be a good option for someone who doesn't want to shell out the money for a D200 but wants a higher resolution than the D70.

My guess on SD was around both size and cost. Probably leveraged a lot of the D50 work there as well.

Looks like a really nice camera. As a Canon user I sure am getting more and more disappointed in how little customization we can do on our camers. Check out the customer function list on this new D80; amazing!
I would sure like my Canon internal flash to work like the Nikons too (commander mode); I just won't pay an extra $200 for a bulky wireless flash controller when it should be built into the camera flash in the first place.
And a IR wireless remote too.
Way to go Nikon!!!!

Craig,
I am a Nikon user, but I expect Canon to have a TON of new things soon because of Photokina 2006 in September.

Yes,
And *hopefully* FF DSLRs will eventually come down enough in price enough for us commoner peons to afford them.
