I had time for a quick overnighter, so I headed up to the South Colony Lakes TH yesterday, to shoot sunrise this morning. It poured rain most of yesterday evening and last night, which had me hoping for mood clouds this morning. Nope. Clear skies. No biggie. I hit the trail at 4:20 and was standing beside the upper lake before sunrise. (hey, I'm fat and slow...) I posted an alpenglow shot over on ESS. This is the sunny morning view.
The USFS spent two weeks in June improving the road as far as the first creek crossing, in anticipation of closing the road beyond the crossing to vehicle traffic in the near future. Past the improvements, however, the road is still one badass mo-fo! It's a tough 3+ mile section of road, but quite a lot of fun, so I wish they'd just leave it open.

Thanks for the info and the nice photo. I especially like the cloud patterns.

I love the sunny morning views in high places. The reflecting peak is a nice touch. I'd be curious to know why they're closing the road off in the future. That drive is part of the adventure! ( ... and I thought it helped keep the crowds away).
REALLY love the alpenglow shot Todd. Very unexpected and unique.

Todd,
Great shots I think I like this one better than the other in ESS. This has a lot going for it, from the trail on the right to the sharp reflection in the lower left and of course the two peaks. I guess what I am saying terrific compisition!

I like the placement of the reflection pool in the shot.

Although this one is very nice, I like the ESS photo better (the light). Thanks for posting.

Love the reflection. I'll go and checkout the ESS version.

Todd, great shot. I also like this one better. The ES post seems a little out of balance, while this composition feels about perfect. I looked at this at home last night too and I like both of them better there (calibrated monitor); both seem a little bright at work.
