Black-tailed Godwit
Another shot from a hide at Slimbridge earlier this week. Getting any lower wasn't an option again and had to use a 2x as well. Couldn't believe how busy these are only stopping for a breath/lookout for about a second. Shot about 2gb trying to get shots with it's bill out of the water and also to get half decent lighting on it. The sun was sideways on. Didn't stop down to f11 again as I needed the fastest shutter speed I could get at that focal distance

Comments and critique welcome

Graeme

Hi Graaeme
great picture with plenty of detail in the feathers. The droplet of water on the Birds beak just lifts the picture to a higher level.

Hi Graeme

I think this is an excellent shot. Nicely composed, good light and you have caught the bird in a good pose. This also looks pretty sharp too me, certainly at web size, which is impressive given this is taken wide open with the 2x TC.

You've used the light well here and captured the bird at a good angle, but the head and eye look a little soft to me, albeit not unacceptably so at this size. Since the image is a crop, it is difficult to determine the point of focus at the moment of capture, but my guess is that the focus point was over the grey feathers above the rear leg as this looks to be the sharpest part of the image.

Using a 1D2 I would have set a "sunny f16" exposure in manual mode here at ISO 400 giving f11 at 1/800s and dropped 1/3 of a stop to 1/1000s. My point of focus with the 2x attached would have been between the neck and the bird's shoulder to render the whole of the subject sharp at f11. If I was trying to get the whole reflection I would have placed the point of focus at the top of the bird's left leg.

Well worth the effort.
A very nice image.

I like the lighting and pose, and it looks sharp enough on my monitor.
