Hi Chris
I do my own site although admittidly very slowly since my son was born in May, I did a nightschool course about 5 years ago on writing HTML code. I coded my own website in notepad ..the hard way..without any software packages then I approched a company called Clara.net [http://www.uk.clara.net/] to host it for me, they also set me up as www.larrycorbett.com ( I bought some FTP software (File Transfer Protocol) which I use to upload my web pages on the Clara's servers.
My initial website was 200 pages and contained about 500 images..the more you put on the more you pay..at the moment my website is very basic as I am re writing all the pages and scanning in my entire slide collection...1000's of slides (nearl there!!!) Clara charge me £8.21 per month to host my site. They will also write you a website!, but it's not cheap they charge about £100 per hour for web development but you have to buy 10 hour blocks so that'll cost you about a grand for 10 hours of their web developer (you may be luck he may type really fast!!) then you have to add on hosting charges and purchase of your domain.
my 12 week nightschool class cost £60!
Another company to try are http://www.uk.clara.net/

Hi Chris,
I might be able to give you some good advise. I used to be a web-designer before I became a pro-photographer. I still design my own websites: see www.enwp.co.uk and www.landofthetiger.com
I use 1&1 Internet for hosting. They are cheap, reliable and secure. They have many self-help pages, forms and tools that are very useful. see www.1and1.co.uk. Most ISPs will supply you with webspace when you order and account so check with your supplier. You will only need 50-100Mb max.
I use dreamweaver, by Adobe/Macromedia to design the sites. Its very simple to use, yet powerful at the same time. If you can use MS Word then you can design a website!
If you need more detailed advise, contact me at elliott@enwp.co.uk and I'll be happy to share a few more tips.

Hi Chris
If you want to build a site from scratch and design your own webpages, etc, then I recommend One & One as a host provider. I have used them for the last three years with no problems whatsoever. Various packages from £6/month upwards. Slightly pricey but a good provider.

If you just want to upload photographs without the headaches of writing and maintaining a web site then there are several popular options to choose from. PBase and SmugMug are two that spring to mind, but there are others. These are geared up for photographers wanted to display their work. PBase is $23/year for 400 MegaBytes of storage.

SmugMug is similar to PBase but is also geared up for photographers wanting to sell prints, although unfortunately this part of their service is US focussed. But if you just want a nice looking photo gallery it will do the job for $40/year.

Hi Chris
I just started a Website with Smubmug 4 weeks ago and it is absolutely brilliant. Hassel free and just drop in your pictures into Galleries. Please have a look at mine and you will get the idea.

Hi Chris
I have used Tivoli (www.tivoli.com) who seem to me to be quite good and very good value. I employed a young student to design my website quite cheaply. I think he did a good job but its down to personal taste. If you want I would be happy to put you in touch, PM if interested.
