I popped into the Cotwold Water Park to have a look at the Andy Rouse exhibition and was impressed with the quality of the detail in the print on what looked like a matt finish paper.

Having always been wedded to the traditional glossy or lustre paper I was wondering if anyone knew or could hazard a guess at the type of paper used

TIA

Did it look textured? I know a lot of pros are using Glicee style paper for presentation work including myself. Check out St. Cuthberts Somerset papers design for inkjet printers. Its unbelievable for rendering detail, just astonishing! Its also known as Art Wrag.

Could have been Epson Heavyweight Matt it seems to be a really popular paper from what I've seen.
It's funny you should post this, as I've just this second been experimenting with an image printed on Epson Premium Glossy and on Epson Heavyweight Matt.
I bought a pack of the A3 Matt a while ago,and like yourself I've always been drawn to glossy or semi-gloss out of habit really.Every now and then I think I might like to try an A3 matt print just to see how it comes out.Although still a little hesitant to use it,I don't know why as I've always been thrilled with the results, both in finish, detail and colour accuracy.
Just looking at the two prints now on the gloss versus matt media, and I really can't see any difference in detail or colour.

I plan to use much more Matt I think from now on.

There are quite a few advantages also.1) It has better archival qualities than the gloss/semi-gloss,at least on an Epson 1290S printer. 2) It's a fraction of the price. 3) It's no where near as delicate 4) It doesn't create it's own reflections, has to be a bonus when framing behind glass.

Not sure if the Epson Matt comes in bigger sizes than A3 though. So if Andy Rouses prints were bigger than that, perhaps it's a completely different brand altogether. Also, perhaps it's not Epson media at all, maybe he gets them printed by a lab,in which case who knows.

Hi Andrew

I also saw Andy's exhibition at the Water Park Visitor centre recently (and I also was doing the photographer thing and examining the prints up close...)

My guess is Andy is printing on a Fine Art paper such as Somerset Velvet, the paper had a textured finish which looked like a cotton based art paper.

Funnily enough I have just purchased an Epson R1800 printer and I am busy evaluating various papers. I like the Lyson Smooth Fine Art paper for the textured finish look. There are also variations on the paper with different textures, some are very rough with almost a canvas feel to them. I also recently bought some Ilford Fine Art paper. This is a lighter art paper than the Lyson, but also quite a bit cheaper, my initial impressions are good.

There are several places you can buy trial packs of various paper types so you can do your own evaluation and decide what paper you prefer. Although bear in mind for optimum results you also need to get a custom ICC profile made of your printer and paper combination.

I have bought paper from ;

www.marrutt.com - For Lyson papers
www.thedarkroom.co.uk - For Ilford papers
www.onlinepaper.co.uk - For Somerset, Crane Museo, Hahnemuhle, etc

My guess is Andy is using one of these papers in something like an Epson 4800 printer. But this is just a guess, it could be something quite different. Try emailing Andy and asking him.

cheers

Sean

If anyone wants any details on paper ask me ;) Having worked for St Cuthberts at wells, and St Regis at Watchet and my parents owning griffen mill, i have plenty of papers to recommend... :)

Paul,

Do you have any experience with using an Epson 1290,if so are there any other papers you'd recommend that work particularly well with this printer, other than Epson Premium Glossy,Premium Semi-Gloss,Heavyweight Matte and Ilford's Galerie Smooth Gloss and Smooth Pearl, all of which I'm familiar with.

Thanks.

Hi Justin

I previously owned a 1290 and used Lyson Standard Fine Art Paper and Somerset Velvet Art paper in it without any problems.

cheers

Hmm, Somerset Enhanced inkjet paper should be AOK, its well coated and is cotton. I own a 1290, I've done a few prints on it, i must admit i need some more A3 paper for it.

I use the Epson Textured Fine Art paper for most of my framed A2 images. It is superb, lasts a lifetime, but costs a bomb! However, people buying a big print expect the best so that's what I try to give.
Best wishes
Phil

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the suggestion.I'll have a look into that one.

Apologies to Andrew for inadvertently hi-jacking your thread.

Regarding the Andy Rouse prints I'm sure an e-mail to him would reveal the paper type he uses.If you find out please let us know.

Hi I have used the Epson Textured Fine Art paper and agree with Phil K it is superb, I also use ilford galerie, and Jessop's inkjet art canvas which is 100% cotton a true canvas.

I've just had a look on the Andy Rouse web site and it would appear that he uses Giclee 300g photorag - I think this may be by Hanhemuhle ?

I'm glad I started off a very interesting thread
