We been for 14 days travelling in sourthern Tanzania photographing. Departing at Dar Es Salaam I was instructed that all photo equipment , portable harddisk etc had to be put into the check in luggage(which is a duffel bag). Due to terror threats at London Heathrow we only could carry passport and wallet in a transperent plastic bag. Arriving Oslo no luggage show up, and now it is three days since we arrivied. I guess I have to say goodbye to 15000 US worth of photo equipment , a lot of good pictures etc. It is very frustrating and I dont really know why I bother you with this story, But I guess that this a story about always to do backups either on CD -Rom which can be send by post or leave harddisk backups at the site where you are departing.........

Hi Trym,
I'm sorry for you  Next year I plan to do some travels, but every day the idea of traveling by plane is ever more scary :frown:

How unfortunate that these things have to be happening. I hope you are re-united with your gear, and if not, hope it was insured!! :frown:

I hope your gear and files show up! A terrible way to end what I am sure was a fantastic trip. When I heard about the banning of all carry-on baggage, I knew there would many photographers caught in the middle of trips without many options for the safety of their gear.

Did you have insurance on your photo equipment?

Oh, this really breaks my heart. Has the airline offered any kind of compensation?

This is horrible news - I can only imagine the shock. Hopefully the equipment will be found and forwarded, Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the sympathy folks. I do have insurance so these matters will solved in due time. It is still hope that the luggage will show up. The lesson I learnt is that next time I will burn CD«s before going home, and send them by post or FedEx to make sure that I have a copy of the photos.

Glad to hear you had insurance! That doesn't replace the photos though. :frown: Hopefully they will be found and forwarded to you!

Nightmare!

On behalf of your missing images, I hope the bags appear. We're so paranoid that in addition to shipping discs home, we burn yet another set and carry that with us.

Our experience/paranoia extends into the insurance arena as well. Even quick service on claims can leave you cameraless for weeks, and it's worse if there are contended points. We simply can't afford to be without, so we go one step beyond equipment backups. We maintain a separate savings account specifically for replacements. If claims come through we simply use them to restore the fund, but meanwhile the account leaves us in a position to immediately replace gear rather than wait.

Let's see.... Security precautions and strategies, backup CDs, backup gear, extra shipping costs, special savings accounts. Have we spent enough of your time and money yet? :frown:

All just collateral damage in the War on Carry-Ons.
