Canon EOS 1Ds MkII, 600/f4 + EF2xII, Wimberley Head on Groundpod.
Manual exposure mode: f11, 1/400, iso 400, AWB.
RAW image processed in Capture One; sharpened in Photoshop CS2 (amount = 100 percent; radius = 0.2; threshold = 0 applied five times); full frame.
I was hoping to catch the wing flap here and wanted a bit of blurring in the wing movement. I thought that a shutter speed in the region of 1/400s to 1/640s would probably work. The focus point was on the neck where the white feathers and black feathers meet for maximum AF contrast with the camera set to AI Servo. Having C.Fn-17 = 1 expanding the AF point activation area by one point all around the manually selected focus point helps to maintain focus, even with limitations of the 2x extender.

Amazing shot Phil. The splashes from the wing beating & the low level angle makes it a real pleasure to view. Nice work!!

Superb Phil. A great shot all round, the shooting angle, the sense of movement, composition and the exposure. I really appreciate your comments with so much technical detail. I think this can really help me in the future.
for the image and

Hi Phil
Great action shot and plenty of detail in the plumage. Also the spray of the water is an added bonus.

Hi Phil
Glad to see you posting again. Always top class work and this is no exception.
No nits from me on this one. A lovely shot, great colours and the action is caught perfectly. I can't remember seeing a better Oystercatcher image.
cheers

The intimate angle on this shot and the detail and action are superb. Simply getting down to eye level really enhances the shot above others of similar subject matter.
