I don't do anything else. In fact I'm a little embarassed about how poor my other photography is. I would like to learn and practice portraiture, but I enjoy my time alone in nature so much, I just don't really want to work with people!!
I probably took more photgraphs last year of my kids sport teams (soccer, baseball, lacrosse) games than I did of natural subjects. That was a matter of opportunity more than one of preference.

I would like to do more sports photography as well.... I did some 2 years ago and I really liked doing it. I've been doing artistic gymnastics myself for 13 years...so photographing the European Championships was a lot of fun. Here are some results...
And finally a sample of a still life documentation shot at the local museum. This is a detail shot of The pump and expansion chamber of a restored 1907 Ahrens "Continental" horse drawn Steam Fire Engine: Precious Pumper
All of these were shot with my trusty old Sony DSC-F707.

Great shots guys .And its nice to see what other subjects you nature people take.
Jasper Doest - I really like your Gymnast shots .They all have a majestic look about them.

Alan and Gary, please sign up for a free membership at CarShots.net! Your motorsport photography is fantastic and I'd like to build the CarShots site into the "NPN of car/motorsport photography." The site has been online for some months now and your participation would be welcomed!
On the commercial side of our lives we shoot the whole gammut- basically anything anyone will pay us to shoot. While that adds up to diversity, we have to keep our personal shooting active and creative simply to recapture the fun of photography that brought us into the business in the first place.
For that, both my wife and I rely on self-assignments. Conceiving and shooting projects simply for the fun of it or for learning new techniques.
Here are four I'm working on right now:
Rotten light. (How to find good shots even when the light stinks at midday).
Animal tracks in broad landscapes. (Low POV with WA lenses- letting viewers inject the animal into a scene).
Bear poop. Seriously! (An outgrowth of the track shooting- looking for tasteful ways to use a resource more plentiful than bears to suggest their presense in landscapes).
Be a tourist. (Shooting iconic local subjects. Harder than you think, but resulting in a freshening and broadening of the portfolio.)
My photography tends to get stale and the fun fly out the window if I'm not exploring new stuff all the time. If I had been stuck on one subject or type of photography, I probably would have quit a LONG time ago.

Thanks for the link Jim.I just posted my first photo in there

I'm like Hank in that I need to explore new subjects regularly otherwise I wouldn't feel like I'm stretching myself very hard. Also other types of photography gives you a new perspective when you shoot your bread and butter subjects. For example, yesterday I went to shoot livestock photos at the Kentucky State Fair because I'm an animal lover and because almost every year I've gone to the L.A. County Fair or Orange County Fair with family or friends.
I do a bit at kart racing and shinty take up a fair bit of my time when I can't be bothered with the nature stuff. The karting stuff has really mushroomed to the point that I'm now looking to employ a couple of helpers just to keep up with the demand.
I do a bit of sport coverage for several weekly papers but nothing that will make me rich.

Great shots of gymnastics, Jasper! Since I was 13 yrs old, watching Nadia do her thing when she was about that age, I've been a big fan of women's gymnastics (heck, maybe my interest started with Olga Korbut). Your shots of this sport are exceptional.
I will try shooting most anything once, but my favorites other than nature are:

Fantastic Kart pics John .Love the panning ones.

Well, I learned something new...I had no idea that there was even a sport called "shinty". Nice action shots, John!
Stacy, I love your rock climbing photos! I'm guessing you're not using a 4x5 to get them. Your tennis shots are excellent also.

There are OTHER things to photograph?!?!???
Actually, most of the photos I take which are not strictly of a nature subject are things which I have found while out shooting. Mostly barns, fences, farms, etc. On a rare occasional, even a person. Here is a link to my "Other Images" gallery, which is a pretty good summary of my non-nature photography.
It's funny that Hank would mention bear poop. One of my own memories of late summer is bear poop full of cherry pits. This year I took some photographs of the fruits of our labor at an afternoon of cherry picking, but that's not the way I usually saw pin cherries. The birds and the bears usually get them all. About all I got to see was bear poop punctuated by cherry pits. Anyhow, there is one bear poop picture I plan to take when the opportunity arises - just for the fond memories it brings back. My family will get it, I'm not sure anyone else will. (well, maybe Hank).

ps - the title of this photo will be "Life is a bowel-full of cherries."

Nice examples everyone! My kids are not photographed enough (I admit that, and my wife will quickly agree). Here is one of my favorites of the middle of my three sons.

I've been doing a lot of aviation photography lately... but that'll change when I (hopefully) get my 500L IS and get back into real birds, not the big metal ones.

If it can be captured with my camera I like to shoot it. Since getting my 1D Mark II I've begun to enjoy action photography quite a bit. My favorite event to photograph to date is the Mavericks Big Wave Surf Contest...
Also since moving to San Francisco I've found I've accumulated a decent collection of photos of the Golden Gate Bridge.

2 years ago my son started playing pee wee baseball and the best fit for me to contribute to the team is to take photos and make portfolios as keepsakes for the families. I love the balance of their amazing athleticism and yet still be little kids

Usually dark purplish and not particullarly well-formed as far as such things go. I blame this whole line of conversation on Hank, by the way.
