The background is a bit grainy so maybe a tad over sharpened but a great image anyway-perfect DOF and a nice perch :toast:

Hi Vince

Perhaps a little over sharpened but a nice perch and very good DOF - I appreciate that shooting in the conditions you describe you had to use flash but I am not a lover of black BG's.

Hi Vince,

I agree with the DOF but I'm afraid I agree with Dave K with the black BG.

Regards Chris.

Hi Good detail and colour, a shade oversharpened yes, but main nit is the same as others... perhaps you could try balancing the flash more with the available light to avoid the dark flash bg.

Hi,

I agree with everything said above - I'm not a fan of black backgrounds for diurnal species.

Phill gave good advice but looking at your techs I'm not sure you could have sacrificed appature or shutter speed much while handholding. Another way of avoiding it would be to make sure there is something fairly close to the subject in the background so that it is lit by the flash as well or using a second flash to light the background. Of course by the time you've set something like this up the butterfly will have flown off but thats wildlife photography for you.

Thanks for the above critique & comments, very much appreciated :toast:

The ring flash I am using is a new toy I am playing with, yes I agree also about the black background creating the lack of natural habitat. More practice needed with the settings.

So many buttons to look at now & tweek to get the exposure right  & because of this I am ending up in a nervous mess before I hit the tigger

Cheers everyone

Vince
