What causes photos to "drop off the stack" in the galleries?

I assumed that with time older photos in the galleries are deleted, because some I've posted a longer than a month or two back are now gone. Yet older photos from other people are still there. Do the gallery moderators do a periodic clean-up/weed-out to save disk space?
Images hosted on NPN are deleted after a given period of time. Images linked from external sites can stay longer.
Also images in some galleries (e.g. Editor's Pick) do not expire, as far as I know.

The forum software automatically deletes all threads in the photo critique galleries older than 35 days. The exception are photos moved to the Moderators Picks or Staff Showcase galleries.
This is NOT done on the PhotoPortflios.net site - photos remain until you choose to delete them yourself.
