This morning I took my wife up to Chasm Lake for sunrise. It was a nice walk, but the weather wasn't too cooperative. The clouds closed in on the eastern horizon so there wasn't much of a sunrise. We simply climbed up, saw the lake, and then headed down to try to catch something from just above Columbine Falls. Any thoughts on this image?

Eric - I like the composition, but I would lighten up the grass and water. I also think you should give it another go on Saturday morning!

Hi Erik,

This is nice, glad you could see the sun burst through for a moment. Did you happen to climb down just a bit and get anything with the sunlight hitting the water?

Very nice composition, but I would agree with the others in saying it's a little dark and a little too much blue reflecting from the ground.

Do I detect a light paint?

I like the image as is.

Thanks for the comments. It was quite dark and moody when I took this and so this is fairly accurate. I'll try to lighten this up and decrease the blue a little when I get a chance later today. Tony, I didn't go down to the water itself. I spent a little time last night looking at the cool photos that Jesse and others have taken of the falls and didn't want to do a repeat. Also, I was a bit caught off guard by the sunrise as I though the clouds were too thick for the sun to show itself. No light painting here. Thanks again for the comments!

Did Luke make the trip with you guys?

I think you captured the mood you mentioned. The foreground blues are a bit distracting, on my monitor anyway. But you noted the blues already. I might like to see a little more of what's going on at the bottom. Seems to be tight there. Or even try cropping higher. Otherwise, nice image for being caught off guard. And don't worry about copying! At least not in popular places like this. I shot my version of the falls after seeing Fielder's image.

Ok guys, here is another shot which is lightened up and with less blue. Is this better? Brent, Luke stayed at home with Grandma who is visiting. It was the first hike with just my wife in three years!

Erik, I'm actually thinking of one looking out over the water as opposed to back towards Long's Peak. I haven't seen a photo of the image that I'm thinking of, the closest would be Glenn Randall's where he's looking out over the falls with the red sunlight on the water. Looks like you might not have have had any sunlight on the water this morning anyway.

I've thought of climbing down to Peakcock Pool to get something different - not sure if you can see the top of Long's from there, though.

On the 2nd version I would increase the contrast for the bottom half.

Erik - I like the image as it is a very good composition. I was wondering if darkening the clouds would make it a moody image.

I like the way the sun is just below the clouds. Nice shot! :toast:
