Posting the details

I have noticed that some photos being posted don't have accompanying details about equipment used and locations, so I would like to request as a reminder that such info be provided. Especially when it comes to locations. If photographers don't want to give an exact location for some reason that's fine, but at least provide the state, country or continent where the shot was taken. It would also help with species identifications.

Yes, I agree! I just viewed a couple of posts (including from a well known) and there wasn't much detail at all. You don't have to write a story (although I really enjoy them!) but include something for the curious. Thanks for posting Paul!

I agree too! Especially if you're new...the technical details help greatly in the critique process. And we want to know a little about you and your images!

I've been guilty of neglecting the technical detail recently too. I'll make sure to include them.

I think depending on the gallery that some details are more important than others. In flora and macro, including the SS and aperture is helpful since DOF is so sigmificant. In ES&S, most times that level of detail is not as important to me, though I still like to know what camera and lens were used, especially the focal length.

I think including technical details when they are important to the what we are seeing is gracious, but you should omit the details when they are not important.

It won't happen, but I'd rather hear what you thought was special about your subject and how you tried to show that to me with your photograph.

Glad for this post as I am new to NPN and still learning my way around. I am going back and adding more detailed info (for those who want it) to the images in my portfolio. And I agree, for the image critique galleries, I'd like to hear a little about what stopped you in your tracks to take the photo; also at least the essentials of tech data, esp. exposure. I know that exact locations are sometimes treated as privileged info and rightly so, but how about the general area? And I'll do the same when I post.
Thanks everyone for contributing your thoughts on this.

I agree with the previous comments...the techs are quite useful, in particular for wildlife and macro/flora.

Glad you brought this matter up, Paul, as I was getting frustrated in viewing avian posts that did not tell you much. In fact, quite a few don't even inform you where they live!

Great points Paul and Kwan. Another reminder, all you have to do is click the Preferences link in the green navigation bar on any forums page to add a home location to your signature (box).
