Things have been a little slow down here on the Gulf Coast. It's too hot to do much hiking with all that heavy camera gear, so I've found it better to find a shady spot for my lawn chair and one with a clear view of the bird feeders. A cold drink close at hand makes the waiting easier and the heat a little more tolerable. August and September are the months for the Ruby-throated Hummingbird to move back into the area, getting ready for their fall migration.
Here is one of my recent vistors, caught while backing off the feeder. Canon 30D, 600mm f/4 lens w/25mm ext. tube, 580EX fill flash and flash extender. Manual focus.
Composition could be improved, but I like this one the way it is.

I don't know how you "compose" a hummer - seems that they're the ones in the driver's seat! But I like this image - the lens and extension tube really give a nice background, yet the bird is nice and sharp - nice job on this one. Thanks for posting!
Dick, I can't say I'd change much on this one. Great focal length and just the right amount of flash. Well done.

Great action and capture Dick. Nice use of fill flash and the bg is very complimentary to your subject. It's too bad the shooting conditions weren't better for you (backyard, chair & cool drink)! Thanks for posting!

Over the summer I tried my hand at capturing Hummingbirds, without any success though. Great job with this one, I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks for sharing!
