Nikon 4000 Problems

I've owned a Nikon 4000 scanner for years and it's worked flawlessly. I rarely use it these days. I turned it on last night to scan an old transparency and the scanner appeared to be working right but when I try to load Nikon Scan software, it tells me that no scanner can be found. I haven't tried to reinstall the drivers yet. That's next on my list. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Is there an XP update that's known to cause this?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I had a Nikon Coolscan IV ED for quite a while. I can't remember what operating system was in vogue when I first installed it. I upgraded that computer to XP home, moved to another PC which came with XP PRO. I kept both computers at the latest state of the Microsoft updates. I did not have any problems. I also kept upgrading the Nikon software as the latest is still compatable with the Coolscan IV. It works even better with my new Coolscan 5000D. If you have not kept the Nikon software up to date, I suggest that you update that before you try anything drastic. The only annoying thing that I found with the updated Nikon software is that it let you know what the new features that were available on the Coolscan V, in my case, that were not available in teh hardware or firmware of the Coolscan IV.

Good Luck!

When this happens to me with my Coolscan V, it's because my scanner isn't turned on. I need to turn my scanner on before I start the Nikon Scan software. Sounds stupid, I know. I hope your problem is as easy to solve as this.

Actually, I have another simple fix that happens to me occasionally: the firewire cord tends to not stay in the receptacle tightly and once I tighten everything is ok.

I have an older Nikon LS-2000 SCSI scanner and it MUST be turned on before the PC is turned on or it can't be found either.

Thanks for the help. I have the scanner turned on and plugged in before starting the computer. I've checked the configuration of my fire wire port and it is enabled.

I'm beginning to think that something is wrong with the scanner.

Dan,

Do you have another FireWire device you can attach to it to see if it is recognized by the OS?

Also, are you trying access the scanner from within Photoshop? If yes, then the Twain driver might be corrupted, or the Nikon driver is not working properly.

I hope you get it sorted out.
