Recent trip to Colorado
I have been lurking for awhile enjoying all the fine photos posted here so I decided it was time to join the group. I live in Fort Smith, AR and have been shooting digitally for about 2 years. I have been forturnate to have taken two of Tim Ernst's workshops and I had the chance to put some of the fine techniques he taught to work in Colorado this summer. The above shot was taken near Rabbit Ears Pass, Steamboat Springs Colorado. I used a Canon 5d and a sigma 180 macro for this Columbine detail. Here is link to a few other shots I got while in Colorado,

Thanks for looking

Tom, a great big WELCOME to CSNP! Glad you decided to join us. I love the colors of this columbine and your shallow dof selection. I took a look at your gallery and there are some really super shots there too. But then I wouldn't expect anything less from a Tim Ernst Academy graduate!

BTW, are there any nature photographers in Arkansas that haven't taken a workshop from Tim? Thanks for posting! I'm looking forward to seeing more! :wavey:

Thanks for the great first post, Tom. I'm looking forward to more. I also enjoyed your gallery. It looks like you must have hit the peak of the wildflower season this year. I'm a little jealous, but Ihope to catch the fall colors this year. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks Wayne and Ken. Ken, I am planning on sneaking back to Colorado for the fall colors too. My daughter and he husband live in Steamboat and are keeping me up to date on the fall colors for the next few weeks. It snowed in the Flattops this past weekend and there are signs of changes in the ground ferns and some of the willows. It looks like the third week of September my be the best bet right now. I am targeting September 18-24 right now.

Hey Tom, you mean you were actually awake during class? It sure does look like it! Several other folks that I know were in Colorado this summer complained about the lack of flowers - obviously your photos show what can be done by someone who knows what they are doing and are willing to spend some time to get great images. Keep up the great work, and take care of my lens....

Tim, your lense is doing great! I am really glad you decided to part with the Canon24-70L, it really is a great all around lense. By the way, your new Web Site looks great!

Welcome Tom - nice post! Beautiful saturated color, nice DOF, and great detail in the stamens. I look forward to seeing more in the future.

Between starting back to my real job teaching, and taking care of one of our cats with heart disease, my time in the wilderness with a camera has been nil for some time now. But it seems that several CSNPers have plans for a fall Colorado trip, myself and another photographer friend included. Anyone interested in hooking-up somewhere in the Rockies for a "meet and greet" on the 23rd?

Bill, I only wish I could. I am trying to work out the details of a  "drive-by-shooting" for a couple of days the week before you are going to be there. But I'm not sure yet whether I can pull it off. Thanks for the invite though! :wavey:

Welcome, Tom - I really like the vividness of the columbine - it has a great 3-D look! Very nice. Keep them coming!

My fall is dedicated to another week in Moab in late October - I only wish I could take another week off to do Colorado too!

Thanks to all for the nice comments. Hey Bill, where do you plan to be in Colorado on September 23rd? My plan right now is to spend some time in the Crested Butte and Breckenridge area. I would like to hook up if we are both in the same area?

Tom -
My plan is to roll into the Crested Butte - Kebler Pass area sometime during the early afternoon of the 23rd and set up camp. As the time gets closer, I'll know more details, but will email you a couple days before you leave on the 18th to confirm a place to meet.
