I am trying to take a long weekend this weekend, and am debating some different locations. Has anybody been to Canyon of the Ancients National Monument? If so, is it photogenic area? Is there good shots to be had, or is it mostly good for seeing the ruins?

Hi David,
Yes, I took several shots of it for my most recent book. I'd recommend first going to the visitor center. They have pictures of a lot of the ruins there. So you can just ask the ranger how to get to any places you are interested in. There's a couple of ruins at the visitor center, though most are spread out over a very wide area. Hovenweep is nearby, so it might be worth checking out as well.

If I go there, does that mean I will come away with shots as good as yours!
Thanks for the info Grant. While I enjoy going back to the same place many times, so I can get a good feel for it, and hopefully find the best shots, I also really enjoy going to new places. I wish I had more time, because there is so much to see in SW Colorado.

If you know which way to point a camera and can click the shutter release, you'll get shots at least as good as mine. .
Yeah, although I often have to return to the same place, I much prefer photographing places I've never been to before. I think I like exploring new places at least as much as photography. And Canyons of Ancients has a lot of places that haven't been photographed too much.

Grant, just got back. Thanks for your input, I am very glad I went! After a bit of a slow start, I found some great places. Hopefully I will be able to write a trip report soon, but I am pretty buried.

Here is one shot from Hovenweep. I still have not quite mastered the art of capturing light like I would like to, but this one isn't bad. I always like to process at least one shot after a trip, but the rest (and the trip report) will probably be awhile.
