I posted this in ES&S as well, but figured what the hey. I took this image a couple weeks ago.

The Kadunce river is one of Minnesota's more dramatic river's and the combination of a narrow gorge and unusual rock makes for some intriguing possibilities. This image is a result of one of those moments when I had that internal trigger to make a photograph. I wasn't quite sure what it was and didn't know the composition immediately but "worked" the scene for a bit. This is what I came up with. The river bends at this point and drops off of a smallish waterfall to a pool below before continuing on its way to lake superior. My desire wasn't to simply show the gorge or to create an image that was more concerned about relaying the sense of surround. Instead, I wanted to relate my interest in the light and forms taking place. Something more intimate and less immediate in other words.

Joel,

The definitely works for me. The colors & detail are what make this image. I might look at this cropping out the rock in the bottom but it doesnt impact the image greatly. The use of the 4x5 makes this even better.

Real Nice.

Thanks for the comment Jack. The lower right rock bothered someone in the ES&S forum as well, and I understand that the composition leans toward the unconventional. I included it because the rocks wall in the upper left felt overly heavy without it there to balance it out. A bit of a compromise act in other words.

Very nice, Joel. I really like the colors and detail you captured in this scene.

What makes the rock not totally out of place is that it as a point and points right into the picture. I have lots of images that have things that were "there" in the image. I rarely and I mean rarely crop them out. This rock certainly does not diminish the image in any way, as far as I am concerned. This is one of the best images I've seen here in the MWNP site!

Thanks for the follow up Jack. Just for clarification, I wasn't in any way trying to discredit your comment. Rather, I just wanted to give an explanation of how I see it (that could be right or wrong really, that's for others to decide ). I'll be heading back to this area in a couple weeks for a 10 day fall shoot, so I hope to reinvestigate this scene again. Some fallen leaves could lead to some additional possibilities.
