I'm heading out to Meeker this afternoon for the sheep dog trials and thought I would take the cameras along. Can anyone please give me some pointers on good places to shoot out there? I've never really been to that part of Colorado.

Thanks!

There are some excellent views from Ripple Creek and Dunckley Passes.
Take 8 Rd. (Flattops Scenic Byway) east out of Meeker.
Approx. 30 miles up you'll run into the junction (FR 205) to Trappers Lake which is also very nice. The Big Fish Creek fire burned most of the country around the lake in 02.
Keep going on 8 Rd. and you'll hit Ripple Creek Pass first just a few miles past the Trappers turn off. The rest area before you get to the top (west side) offers some great views. Keep heading east into the east fork of the Williams fork valley and up the other side to Dunckley Pass. Towards the top there are some really nice views right from the road.

I'll be hunting in the Dunckley Pass area this weekend so don't wear your reigndeer antlers.

Have fun!

Chuck, thanks for the help. We're actually staying at the Sleepy Cat resort which is ~18 miles east of Meeker, so it sounds like I'll be in a good place for shooting. Pictures, that is. I'll leave my antlers at home. I hope you don't bag any reindeers.

Evan,

Enjoy your visit to the Meeker area. I agree with Chuck that Ripple Creek and Dunkley Pass, along with Trapper's Lake are good places to shoot and easy to access. There are some gorgeous mountain lakes in the area, Wall, Mirror, Marvines and others, but some of the best ones require a good hike or horseback ride to get to. If I can help with directions or information let me know.

Sleepycat is a great place to stay from what I hear.
Dona's suggestions are great too if you don't mind a good bit of hiking/riding.

No worries as far as bagging a reindeer (however you spell it) but a muley or elk is another matter...or maybe a drunk Texan if they get too crazy.
