NPN Needs a Podcast....

Discussion

As I drove across the extremely rainy New Mexico landscape for nearly 6-hours today listening to my Ipod and various podcasts, I thought it would be great if NPN started a monthly podcast, perhaps loosely based on the monthly content. It could feature interviews with the authors of those articles, further discussion of the article topic including follow-up questions/comments submitted by other NPN members, and a general interview with the well-known photographers here, and the path they've taken photographically to be where they are today. The interview would be less how to stuff, and more discussion on photographer's paths, philosophies, etc. Perhaps it could also feature some reports/journals from the different regions of NPN...

If I had the tech skill/capacity, I'd definately be interested in helping out with something like this (more of a capacity than skill issue I would guess). Anyone have experience with this stuff?

Any thoughts?

I don't have an iPod; don't want one. I have a triPod.

Brian I think this is an excellent idea especially when you consider the talent of our members.

I very much like the idea too, but it's a matter of resources. I have no idea what would be involved on the technical end, and then there would be the time and effort to do the interviews.

So many great ideas (podcasts, books, vidoes, etc.), so little time. In a few years when I can finally quit working full time maybe some of this can come to fruition.

It really just takes a microphone and some kind of encoding software. I think the biggest challenge is that most articles on NPN rely on accompanying images and illustrations.

Technically, I know that with Sykpe all it would take would be some decent quality microphones (and mailable), some internet phone calls on high-speed connections, and decent digital recording tools. Then, the host of the show could call Guy Tal in Utah via Sykpe, interview him on the digital recording software about this month's article, ask him some discussion questions from other members, and ask him 10-questions about his path/philosphy. Maybe then the host could call Jerry in Tennesse and ask him about the highlights of photographing in North Carolina in the fall (or somewhere in his region). Then the host could call Adam in New Mexico to discuss the recent display at Great Sand Dunes National Park, what it took to organize, what the park wanted, and whom from RMNP is participating. The list of ideas could go on and on... Essentially, the show would be a general interest nature photography (but not just limited to pure photography techincal talk) show but with an emphasis on inspiration rather than simply "how to". With such an emphasis on inspiration, I don't the lack of pictures would be prohibitive to a successful and interesing program. Another alternative would be to send the microphone/digital audio recording equipment around the country to willing members and see what kind of stuff they come up with. A program I would "produce" would probably be completely different then what Mark Hobson would produce, and that difference would be fascinating.

The things I don't know about are bandwidth, cost, member willingness to participate and be interviewed.

Members who run photographic workshops might be the group who would be particularly motivated to do this. I think podcasts would be great.
