Managed to photograph this (I think) female Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum at Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, yesterday during a break from clearing some invasive undergrowth as a member of a voluntary conservation group.

Hello David,
Its a decent enough record shot, in my book, although the main drawback for me is the harsh light and shadow cast on this particular parking space.
I had a bash at these chaps yesterday, for the first time {as i now have a suitable lens}, without much luck . Although there was plenty about, it was a nightmare trying to track one down that was perched on a photogenic stem, and with a bg that didn't overly compete with the prime subject. On the odd occasion i thought i had struck lucky, i ran into the same lighting/perch problem as yourself {and returned home with nothing}.
It seems that there is 'more than meets the eye' to photographing these creatures, and it would be worth looking through this forums pages for some tips/suggestions/ideas, ready for your next attempt {i shall be doing the same}.
