Balancing Rocks
I have seen this only one other time and that was up at Twister falls...Today I saw these at Pony Tail Falls. As much as I am outside and in Nature I do not know what these mean....if anyone could help me out here I would appreciate it...

These were on a rock right at the base of the falls....I am actually surprised that they had not been knocked down by the water....

if you have any info on what these mean please post it....

thanks much

Darren

Darren, did you stop at Chanticleer Point this morning for sunrise? We saw a photog in a silver/gray SUV...

I've often wondered what the deal is with stacked rocks myself. I see than a lot when I'm out pokin' around.

Could be anything from bored teenagers to a religious kearn to a trail marker in some instances. Stacked rocks are amazingly commonplace. I've seen similar hundreds of times in travels everywhere. My money is on bored teenagers in this case, but there have been other times where a kearn clearly has religious significance (like within a stone circle or on a large, flat alter stone) and other times still where unusual stacks of rock simply mark the trail.

I've seen stranger... some years back a good friend and I were hunting in some woods locally and stumbled upon a circle of rocks.. in the center were the remains of a cow, its legs/bones clearly sliced in razor-like efficiency - the intestines burned in a pile right in the center - it was enough to creep us both out.

Ned the first time I ever saw rocks like this I was up at Twister falls...6 miles up the eagle creek trail.....just me and nature...and some kind of birds/ducks I had never seen before....I saw these rocks and just freaked myself out thinking they were alien markings of somekind....there were 2 differnt stacks each about 4 or 5 rocks high....just that I had never seen them before and then I started thinking I had heard noises in the woods.....too creepy for me....now life is good...I am ok....and I realize that its not the aliens out to get me.... :toast:

You should check out some of the areas around Sedona, AZ. One of the touristy things down there is to check out the 'vortexes'. These are areas that are supposed to posess some spiritual or healing capability (YMMV). Anyway, in some locations there are literally thousands of these stacked rock groups. My bet was thousands of really bored kids. I can't confirm any healing powers, but the gazillioins of stacked rocks were cool.

Thanks Brett....I really dont know what to make of it all.... I guess I will keep learning more about these as times goes by...My neighbor says that hikers do it to mark trails...but with these rocks being so close to the water I think it would defeat the purpose....

Yeah, I can vouch for the "bored kids" angle. My son lost his big toe nail due to a dropped rock doing just this sort of stacking with some friends. I think it's akin to organic graffiti, "I was here".

On a related note, here's something I put up awhile ago.
