Hello
Can anyone tell me if you can turn a selected area of a colour photo B/W in PS Elements and if so how?
I'm still fairly new to PS so not too many technical terms please!
Thank you for your help.

Yes you can. You'll need to use adjustment layers and layer masks.
One of the easiest ways: Create a Hue/Sat adjustment layer and desaurate the color. The whole image will turn b&w. Now use a black brush on the layer mask that's created with the adjustment layer and "paint" over the parts you didn't want to have b&w, which will reveal the original color.
there are better ways to convert to b&w but it gets a little more technical
If you need help with adjustment layers and layer masks, consult the help file for Elements or do a search on those terms in this forum or on the web.

What Rod said. It'll probably look better if your brush isn't 100% hard. Alternatively, you can paint with a hard brush and then apply a Gaussian Blur to the Adjustment Layer afterwards.
Or, you can use selection tools (marquee, magic wand, or brush--I've heard that CS doesn't have the Selection Brush that Elements has!) to select the area you want to desaturate; feather the selection, and then apply the Adjustment Layer--it will then have a layer mask conforming to the selection.
But whichever method you use to get to that point, there's something else you can do: Create a second Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer above your image but below the one which desaturates the image. In this second layer, set the Blending Mode to Color. Then play with the Hue slider and see what happens.
