Here is another of my shots of black bears in Clayquot Sound BC, Canada. As with the earlier shot, this animal was hunting for rock crabs. This image has been cropped by about a third, to improve the composition. Closest that I have got to a wild bear though. Tricky things to get a decent exposure from - eithr too black and losing detail or looking washed out! I have played about with PS a little to try and find a happy medium.
Rather you than me getting so close,LOL.
Must have been an unforgetable experience being so close to such a magnificent creature.
Looks like an exposure nightmare, especially as the light looks quite harsh.
The bear itself looks really well exposed with loads of visible detail,I do however find the hotspots in the background just that bit too distracting.
I'm not sure if they could be successfully toned down by doing a double conversion, one for the bear and one for the background.Possibly not if the highlight info is too far gone.Definately worth a try though.
Hi Malcolm, the highlights are a little distracting but IMO that is more than made up by the magnificence of the animal, you wouldn't get me that close to him

I agree that the background is too bright but given the lighting there's probably not a lot you could have done about that and you've done well to preserve the detail where it matters. If you shot in raw you could try doing two raw conversions - one exposed for the bear and one for the background.

Nice to see something a little different from the norm. However the burnt out areas in the background are a little distracting to me. Sorry to be a bit negative.
Regards Chris.

The square framing suits this nicely Malcolm!
Always going to be a challenging exposure situation, but i think you managed a fine result in this lighting, with this subject.
Nice one!
