This 256 kg behemoth also required Carl Zeiss to develop totally new ways of operating a telephoto lens, including servo controlled aiming and focusing
I wonder if Wimberley will develop a head to mount it on? Or maybe JCB have this market already covered?
cheers

Mmmm. 256Kg ? Even my quad would be struggling to take that to some of the places I take shots at.
Wonder how long it will be before Sony have it on one of their Cybershots

The strangest thing is they claim that it was developed for wildlife photography. I can't see many chances to use a lens that size without disturbing wildlife, and a Hasselblad isn't particularly well suited to this use either. Where would all the money for such a lens come from, if it is just to be used for wildlife? I could understand if it were for motion work, as there would be more market for the resulting footage...
Considering it's size and weight, how is any photographer going to get enough unique images with it, that can't be taken with a 600mm f4 on a much smaller format...
EDIT: having just looked at the bigger images of the lens, I think one can guess from the Arabic on the right side of the lens that this likely to be a toy paid for by oil, rather than the images it makes.
I hope they ordered the tripod at the same time, a 50cal mount on a landrover would do... at least it would make it portable

The cosmetic appearence reminds me of those telescopes that are often mounted along the promenades of holiday coastal resorts, and i suspect it would be of more use for that, than wildlife photography
