Hi Tim

I have recently bought an Epson R1800 and I am very pleased with it and I have printed on gloss, matte and art media with excellent results.

If you think you want to do some serious Black and White printing consider the Epson R2400 which has additional black inks. Downside of the R2400 is you have to swap black ink cartridges when switching from matte to gloss media, how dumb is that.

If you want some detailed review info on the various printers available from HP, Canon, and Epson I always suggest reading Vincent Olivers reviews on www.photo-i.co.uk

The new HP B9180 also looks good and Canon has some new Pigment based printers on the way.

Bottom line I think is the current range of A3+ printers from Epson, Canon and HP all produce superb results and the differences are subtle.

cheers

I've got an Epson R2400 in stock. When can you pick it up?

I ordered this in for a customer who then decided that the swapping of the Black inks would be a problem and he also wanted to print on CDs. I ordered a R1800 for him instead and he is over the moon. Just stuck with the R2400 at work and I can't get planning permission from the domestic prime minister (Missus) to bring it home

Hello Tim

I can't speak about any other printers but I have got an Epson R2400 and it is the dogs B*&£"$%S. The prints it produces blew me away. I don't regret buying mine it is so easy to use which helps me as I am a bit thick when it comes to computers and technology.

Cheers

Luminous Lanscape has just posted a review of the HP B9180. Looks good.

Just to add,
The K3 Epson inks print VERY well on gloss AND matte papers when using the Photo Black.
I've used them to print in a wide range of media from watercolour reproductions on textured matte watercolour paper through to photographs printed on high gloss photo film.
I have not changed from the original Photo Black ink, purely on the reccomendation of the Rapid Group salesman. Epson would love me to keep changing the inks, but they would when it would be costing me in the region of £40 every time I did.
The 2400 is a superb printer, it has an everlasting build quality and can handle anything that's thrown at it.

If you can, try a range of papers through several printers and see for yourself which one you prefer.

Also look out for 2nd hand 2100 printers, they are superb printers too, but tend to hold their 2nd hand value quite well.

Whatever you buy, you will be happy with the quality, there are no real dogs in this category.

They're the Ultrachrome inks for the 2400, 4000, 7400, and 9400 printers.

Hi Tim,

I ended up going with the Epson 1290S. It's certainly not the latest model available and is certainly not the quickest by a long shot, however it does what it's supposed to admirably, with really nice print quality.

If I had to replace it tommorow I'd get the same again.

Hi Tim,

Its funny but I seem all alone here with the Canon i9950 so I thought I'd add this is in for an alternative. In recent reviews it compared very well to the 2400 only missing out on when using a microscope for detail. It had 8 colour cartridges (proper colour, not 7 plus a gloss tank). It prints up to A3+ and is way faster than anything in the Epson range. In fact it only takes a couple of seconds to print full bleen A4 prints. I print on gloss, matte and glicee for customers and the detail and colour are startling!

I would have a look at the HP B9180 or the Designjet series of HP. Much more economical to run than the Epson printers and espeially the B 9180 gives both Epson and Canon a run for their money!
