I have seen a light green "enhancing" filter, which looks different than a Tiffen "Red Enhancing" filter. However, it seems to me that green tinted glass would absorb blue and yellow and, thus, enhance red tones. Does this green tinted glass work similarly to the so-called "Red Enhancer"?

It's actually not the color of the filter but some exotic minerals (like dydimium) that are used in/on the glass and their filtering/enhancing capabilities.

Thanks, Guy. Same name as my late father-in-law and our son's middle name. So I could have an "enhancing" filter, with no other designation, which acts the same as the "red enhancing filter" you see advertized? It just looks differenct to me. Ed

Hi Ed,
Are you looking at something like Hoya's Green Field filter? I don't know if Tiffen makes a comparable filter.
This filter is supposed to enhance greens without affecting other colors. I don't know if it works or not. For what it's worth, I have a B&W red enhancing filter and the filter itself has a visible magenta color.
Cheers,

As mentioned, an "enhancing" filter is composed of the oxides of the rare earths neodymium and praseodymium (dydimium). It has a strong absorption peak in the yellow portion of the spectrum and for that reason it is often used in welder's goggles. I used a Tiffen enhancer for a while, but really didn't care for the effect, particularly on the red sandstones of the American Southwest. When I slipped and fell on my camera bag a couple years ago, I found that the filter had broken. I didn't bother to replace it.
