all that Pentax need now is to start making the prime telephoto lenses again....
Alan, do we jump ship back again now

Too late for me Mike, but if pentax had shown they had the same future ambitions/investment in the digital dslr/tele market as canon/nikon a few years ago, i would probably have stayed with them. Ive had the impression that they were happy to plod along in the background {relatively speaking}.
In fairness to pentax, ive never has a single gripe with their film cameras {from my old K1000-ME super's-LX}, or the quality of their lens's from that era, and their K-mount was a blessing for many of us who were always on a budget.
Seems a very long time ago when Pentax were mentioned in the same breath as canon/nikon/olympus/minolta {often refered to as the BIG five}, but maybe this is where they make a start at recovering some ground
It will make interesting reading for me, when the user reviews start arriving

..... he who knows these things tells me there is a replacement for the Canon 100-400 in the wings ... whether this is to be launched at Photokina I know not but it will be welcome and popular I imagine (if and when it makes an appearance)
That's excellent news.. Personally I have been told that their will be no serious upgrades to the 1Ds2 and 1D2 until America next year... but I am looking forward to seeing Leicas M digital..I just hope they get it right as I have a feeling it will be make or break for them...
Oops, sorry, thought I'd wandered into DP Review by accident this morning
So the rumour mills keep turning

The Pentax looks good, and I see Olympus have announced their 10 megapixel DSLR, the E400
The Pentax claims to use a 22 bit(!) ADC so it will be interesting to see if that is just marketing fluff or a genuine improvement to image quality.
Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Sigma are now all putting pressure on Canon and Nikon in the DSLR market (although not at the top Pro end) and bringing in highly competitive products with good features such as in camera Image Stabilisation and sensor cleaning.
I like the Pentax pancake lenses too, excellent for candid or travel photography.
I see Canon has announced the DIGIC III chip, but in a campact camera the G7, not an SLR.
The super gimick for this camera is face recognition !
"For portrait and group shots, the PowerShot G7 is equipped with Face Detection AF/AE, a new Canon technology that automatically detects up to nine faces within a frame and sets the optimum focus and exposure accordingly"

Anyone here going to Photokina? We'll be there on the Saturday if anyone else is around. Fancy meeting up for a quick bevie? If so, email me on rob@cooknell-electronics.co.uk
Should be a good show. On the subject of the Canon 100-400, I notice Andy Rouse has been commenting about a 200-400 in similar guise to the Nikon. Just a rumour mind.
