I am flying in Boston midnight 10/5 and have Friday to Sunday available. Currently I am thinking to drive to Vermont (after reading the wonderful book by David Middleton) and visit Kelly Stand Road, Mt Tabor-Weston Road, Jamaica State Park, and Woodstock area (if time permitted). Do you guys have any suggestion on this? Where should I stay? and most importantly, will I be too early for the peak?

Thanks a lot!

TC,

This year the color appears as though it will be just a bt earlier than normal so I believe you will see some good color and you may even be there at the peak up around Woodstock. One place you should try and get to is the Jenne Farm. It is up near Woodstock and while it is a an over exposed subject all most everyone I know whats a shot of this farm at least opnce in foliage season. You can read about here: http://www.pbpub.com/jennyfarm/jenne.htm .

Jamacia State Park is a great place and you can find great opportunities there any time of the year. Make sure you bring a macro lens to Jamacia. I have been there with David Middleton and it is amazing how he can find some great subject to shot around every bend in the trail. The Mt Tabor-Weston Rd should have lots of color and the stream that crosses the road by the parking lot at the top of the long grade is usually a great spot and is where to cover photo of Davids book "The Nature of Vermont" was taken. lso in the greater Manchester area check out the following roads:

DeLorme Vermont Atlas:

Map 25 - Danby Mountion Road ( off Rt 30 N of Dorset)
Mad Tom Road ( paralells Rt 7 starting in East Dorset)

Map 24 - Sandgate Rd north from Rt 313 then turn left and go through the notch
Pawlet Mt Road north from Rt 315 in Rupert to Pawlet

Map 21 - Kelly Stand Rd the stream along the road is outstanding!! But remember to hike off the road a ways as well.

If you do not already have a room reserved you had better find one. The days you are there around Columbus Day weekend is brutal for finding a hotel rooms as it is the mormal peak time.

Hope you have a great Trip!!

Thanks Jim for the very useful information! I think I will shift a little bit north given your information. Perhaps including Groton State Forest while dropping one of the southern spots. And yeah it's definitely hard to get a hotel! I finally got one in Ludlow.

Thanks,
TC

I was just scouting out Groton State Forest Yesterday. It is one of my favorite spots to just roam around. There is a classic view of Kettle Pond from Owls Head lookout. There is a road that you can drive that takes you to within a quarter mile from the top. But it usually isn't open until wll after sunrise (and of course it is a good sunrise shot!) The alternative is to hike up the road, which adds another uphill mile, but it's really not bad. Depending on the clouds, it can also be a nice sunset shot. As for Kettle pond, there is a trail that circles the entire pond which is about three miles. You'll find all kinds of compositions there. There are many white birches to contrast with the bright colors! I may be up there that weekend myself!

Have fun!
