"The terms and conditions for Opodo’s Reflections competition demands that all entrants grant them a licence to use the photographs forever for no fee. The terms also ask that photographers give up their moral rights in the photographs, and that they assign their rights in any other ‘derivative’ works, such as montages."

This is from Editorial Photographers UK. It is a sad day when even Nikon stoops to such a level. Is it cost cutting or just greed?

Several months ago I bid on a competition locally only to see that a while later they were sponsoring a "competition" in town for the shot. They didn't seem to be scrimping on other costs, hired an agency to do the campaign, just the photography.

I do enter the local city contest which they use for their publicity purposes. While the prizes are generally not spectacular, photographers do retain the rights and more importantly get local publicity. I regard it as a trade off.

Good photographers aren't going to sign away their rights so what is the rational for the practice generally? An organization is going to drive away the better work. That a professional organization such as Nikon seems to be endorsing the practice sets a unwholesome precedent.

This does sound despicable. I'm wondering if a letter or even a petition sent to your local Nikon rep will help.

There's a lot of this going around in US competitions as well, but I do think it's doubly insulting coming from a camera manufacturer that markets agressively to professionals.
