I'll definitely make it and it'll be my first time to silver falls.

my schedule is a little iffy, but I'm tentatively planning to be there.

I'd like to make it - the date seems a little late. I was there last week and things are already turning....

John,
The last two years we had our outing at the beginning and middle of October and the leaves, especially the Big Leaf Maples weren't at peak. Usually the big leafs peak towards the end of October in the lowlands. Here is a link to a map that shows peak colors in The U.S.

Thanks for the info, Erik. We'll be there - our first time to Silver Falls as well.
I should be able to join you on this one. I've been to Silver Falls once during the fall, and there were some lovely colors. I don't remember what part of the month it was though. I think we'll be hitting it about right.

Just an update on colors, I was driving thro' santiam pass over the weekend. The maples in the upper elevations are already in full color. Lower elevations near detroit are turning yellow-orange and some places are turning a bit red. However in the silver falls vicinity I didn't say any bright coloring yet, some pale yellows and light greens.

Umpqua is just startin' to turn - look good in the upper FFO stretch...

I've been riding my bicycle along a 7 mile section of the Banks-Vernonia Trail three days a week (trying to reduce table muscle) and the vine maple is really flaming at about 1,000 feet (near Top Hill). Many shades of red, orange and yellow.
I also talked to the Mt Adams Ranger Station yesterday. They told me the Vine Maple is just starting to turn in the Natural Bridges area.

drove over Mt Hood on HWY 26 SUnday. Vine Maple at about 4-6000 feet it flaming red. Lower, turning yellow.

I went up to Ramona falls (3500 feet) on Saturday and to my suprise, the vine maples were still green. I didn't even see one leaf starting to change. When I was up there two years ago on the exact same weekend, they were already turning red.

I'd sorta like to go on this trip but it's three and a half hours from Hood River. It makes for a lot of driving in one day.

Mark,
If you take I 205 from I 84, Its about 130 miles from Hood River mostly on the Interstate. I bet you could get there in about 2 hours, 15 minutes.

I'll be there !! Anybody shooting the day before and lodging somewhere for the night ? Is Silver Falls worth seeing at sunset ?? I might make a night trip out of this......
Posted by Mark Hudon on September 28, 2006 at 10:48 AM
It takes me a hour to get to the intersection of I-5 and 84. About long is it from there?
Posted by Erik Lundh on September 28, 2006 at 11:04 AM
Mark,
I wouldnt take I84 all the way to I5. It's shorter if you cut over at I205 from I84. But to answer your question, about an hour and a half at most.

Mark, You could meet up with Amy and I at our house in Vancouver. We'd haul your butt down there if you like. That way you would have to drive all that way.
John, No, There is no point in trying to shoot Silver falls at sunset. Its all down in a canyon and the sun really never hits it. There is some nice farm country near though that might be worth looking at in the evening light.

Geez Mark,
I wasn't thinking either. I live right on the way in Tigard. You could meet at my house or Ricks and we could pool from there. Rick lives in West Linn which is also right on the way.

I might take one of you up on the carpooling offer. I'm planning on spending three days up at Goat Rocks with Peggy the weekend before this event. If the weather is bad that weekend we'll go this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

I'm afraid I won't be able to make this trip. Life will be keeping me close to home this week. At least it'll give me time to catch up on some of my processing and cataloging.

I should be able to make it. I haven't been to Silver Falls before either. Really looking forward to it.

AARRRRRGH!! I'm going to be Seattle that day. Maybe next time...I definitely want to make it on one of these outings. Been a crazy summer. Finally get to pick up my camera tomorrow and do some shooting. That's therapy that's been a long time coming.
