Drove over Owl Creek from the Ridgeway side today.
Not much turning on the southwest side. Lots of
leaves look like they will fall off before they
turn. Southwest side is rough, rough, rough. Not
4 wheel, just rough with thousands of pot holes, exposed
rocks and washboards.
The Northeast side road is great. Many of the leaves
look like they will fall off before they turn color.
From Silver Jack on down they look better. There
will probably be good color there over the next
two weeks.

This is not what I want to be hearing right now...
Thanks for the update though.

Leaves that are broke at the base by the wind and such usually go straight to brown without going thru the change of colors. As they turn brown they usually aren't strong enough to hang onto the tree so off they go. It is something I watch every year in my backyard, the wind blows so hard that most of my leaves are on the ground with brown edges long before they get a chance to turn. This weekend didn't help any. So in short if leaves are browning on the edges chances are they won't be around long enough to change color...........

Art,
Thank you very much for this report. I know several folks are looking at heading down that way next week some time. It sounds like Silver Jack will potentially be good.
But I am wondering about the other south western areas such as Dallas Divide, CR 5 and CR 7, as well as Wilson Mesa.
I will be watching these reports very closely. We have two more storms forecasted before mid next week which should effect on colors as well.

To attempt to clear up the color issue a little.
1. The road was covered with ugly sickly green leaves in places.
2. Many trees still had the sickly green leave still hanging in there.
3. In other places, the leave were normal shades of green and yellow.
My guestimate is that part of the trees are sick.

Art,
It is interesting that you described the conditions in this way. I was talking to a co-worker recently who was telling me about many of the aspens dying in the San Juans this year. I wasn't quite sure what to think of her comments. She is pretty knowledgeable about the outdoors and owns an outdoor sporting goods store in Buena Vista.

Here are two articles I found about Aspen tree deaths in the San Juans after a quick google search:
