Water Vole (Last one for a wee while...)
Taken over the weekend at my third Water Vole site. These little creatures are making a come back after the erradication of released mink either by the otter or man's influence.

Hi Tom,
A beautiful intimate view :toast:
The flecks of green on the water surface really add to the images appeal.

Good to hear their making a recovery.

That's another great image Tom. Has there been a formal mink erradication programme in your area? Interested, since our otter population is near capacity but water vole numbers still appear to be very low. Not seeing nearly so many mink, but they are still about. Mind you, our voles were all but exterminated, apart from in some upland areas, so it will undoubtedly take time.

Cheers

Has there been a formal mink erradication programme in your area?

Depends upon what you class as formal - nothing is organised so to speak - just done?

Most of the private land I have access to in the Peaks is, or is near to, maintained moorland/rivers. Obviously Mink are very unwelcome and actively dealt with. The problem with Mink is that they drive out everything else (Lapwing, weasels etc) - predate anything and excell as hunters and don't know when enough is enough.

Recently there has also been big efforts/conservation projects to get rid of Mink on the Somerset Levels with some 260 being removed.

Good one Tom, its a shame its the last one for a while as I really love these guys  We had mink near where I live, only for a couple of months earlier in the year, but they decimated the early hatched ducks and coots. A trap was set in the Mill which they used but they dissapeared before they were caught.
