We have had waves and waves of severe storms in the Buffalo Wilderness area this afternoon and evening, and I hope everyone is OK. Just before the worst of it hit, I made my 10th or 11th trip this summer down to Hawksbill Crag specifically trying to catch a rainbow in the valley behind the Crag. While sitting out a rainstorm there today (several passed by in a row) I looked up and saw IT, a perfect rainbow, right before my eyes. Of course, the camera was safely tucked away in the camera bag, keeping dry, and by the time I got my gear set up the sun disappeared - and the rainbow along with it. I missed it by SECONDS! Hoping for more breaks in the clouds, I stuck around another hour or so - this time I kept the camera at the ready (under my special tripod umbrella) and never left my post. Just before I was about to give up and head back to the cabin, the sun popped out for a few seconds and this rainbow appeared. Snap. Crackle. Pop. I got it!

Wow, great shot Tim! I'm amazed at how "lucky" you get just by being in the right place at the right time (for hours) to get the shot you want.
What's that saying ... Luck is where opportunity meets preparation (something like that anyway).

Hey, I was lucky that it only took me 11 tries! Of course, I missed the first rainbow because I was too lazy so feel really lucky to have seen two of them (with a day like today there may have been twenty!).

very nice Tim, looks like a beautiful view..

Great shot Tim! At least there probably weren't any other photographers around to screw things up!
Looks like today may be a repeat. As I write, the lightning continues to flash like a giant stobe light in the sky (I'm at my computer at work - since the one at home has been unplugged since 8:00 last night when we lost our cable/internet connection). I came into town to check the radar to see how long this stuff is going to last and it's about over where I'm at...think I'll go check out some waterfalls.

Excellent Photograph! A little luck never hurts the results of a little o'l fashion hard work. Well Done!

Great shot Tim. You definately have the knack for waiting for the right picture. Having such beautiful scenery in your backyard helps too.

Hey Tom, how is the snow at your cabin?
Posted by Tom Kennon on September 26, 2006 at 1:05 AM
Tim, I just got back from a trip to my cabin last week to check out the fall colors. We got 14" of snow in about 4 hours Friday night, so I sat in the hot tub and watched huge flakes come down and enjoyed the early dump! It was one of the earliest snows of this magnitude according to the locals. Shooting conditions were somewhat challenging but as you have often said in your classes, with a marco lens, there is alway something to shoot. Here is a link to my initial gallery of shots from the trip.
p.s. I am trying to put the macro techniques you taught to use. Any feedback is welcome.

Sorry to hear you only got 14"! I've always loved the play of snow and fall color - perhaps we will even get some this year in the Ozarks! Lows in the 30's later this week (?)......

From the looks of your slideshow, I'd say you had a great trip Tom! I'm particularly fond of the "Break in the Storm" image - just a wonderful shot!
Sorry I wasn't able to meet you as planned. I had to cancel due to an illness with one of our cats. Maybe next year...
Thanks for sharing the link - nice work!

Bill, sorry you missed your Colorado trip, but maybe we can hook up for the fall colors in the Ozarks. I will be watching for fall updates here in the next few weeks.
