Looks like a 2400 on steroids:

Looks like it doesn't have roll paper support! Other than that, it looks great.

I would go broke buying the replacement inks (60.00 per) with my budget.

I would like to know how much ink the cartridges hold or better still on the cost in approx ink usage say per Sq. Ft or Square Meter compared the their R2400 or other printer.

The 3800 cartridges do look much larger than the 2400 ones. Also, the printer can hold both Photo Black and Matte Black at the same time.

The article indicates that the 3800 cartridges hold 80ml of ink.

According to this link, the cartridges are 80ml. They also have a chart that shows per/ml cost. The new 3800 inks will run 0.75 per ml, compared to 0.95 for the 2400. The best savings on ink (with Epson Printers) is using the 220ml cartridges in the 4800/7800/9800 printers at 0.51/ml.

I'm in shopping for printers... Was attracted by the 2400 but now this new 3800 seams very interesting. Thank you for sharing the news. I'm wondering WHEN it will be available in Italy...

It is getting closer. They need to make the 4800 with 9 cartridges for matte and photo black and they would have something. This one looks like a nice printer, but if it doesn't take roll paper, that is a huge negative. As noted above, the 220ml ink cart.s are also the most cost effective.

I decided to pre-order this printer. The fact that it doesn't take roll paper isn't a turn off for me because I prefer cut-sheets. I'm going to continue to use my 2200 which I have always enjoyed using, for smaller projects or printing images that are for photo albums (for example, the baby girl my wife and I are expecting to arrive in Feb) or other things like that. The 80ml ink does concern me with their cost to capacity ratio. I wish it took 110 or 220ml cartriges. That being said, it looks like its output will be outstanding for a bit less than purchasing a 4800. I'm pretty excited about it.

The Epson web site has all the data on this printer. It doesn't have roll paper or paper tray feeders. It can print 4x6 borderless all the way up to 17 inch wide. MSRP is roughly $1300 USD. The weight and form factor are somewhere between the 2400 and 4800. It holds photo black and matte black both, and can automatically switch between them. The reports from prints seen at Photokina are excellent.

I'm thinking this may be a nice printer to pick up in my new smaller office.

One of the sites that is taking preorders for this printer pont out that it appears to be a free up grade of the 2400. You get $600 worth of ink with the printer, so it is like you get a free upgrade. The fact it does not have a roll paper is not ideal, but I am thinking that lack of a feature will not hurt it to much.

You can readily get discounted ink from various web site, so as soon as the printer is out for a little while, I bet we will get discounts on the ink.

Am I correct in assuming that this printer is optimized for matte papers. Can you even get Epson Premium glossy in 17X22 cut sheets?
