Dan, I would also post this in the CNP and RMNP forums.

I know it doesn't seem like it, but the RMNP forum covers Arizona. I myself am not that familiar with Phoenix (I do my shooting here in the Tucson area), except I have a brother-in-law that lives near the Peralta Trail in the Superstition Mountains (East of Pheonix), a 4-mile hike that leads to a wonderful view of the Weaver's Needle formation. There is also an interesting rock formation in Lost Dutchman State Park, also in the Superstitions.
If you want to travel down to Tucson, Saguaro National Park West is scenic. I often shoot sunsets from the Desert Discovery Nature Trail near the Red Hills Visitor Center. There is also the Signal Hill Petroglyphs, best photographed late afternoon. Another sunset location is Gate's Pass, west on Speedway road in the Tucson Mountains west of Tucson.
