This is a pre-sunrise shot (minimal PP) from the Bells on Monday morning. There were quite a few cameras lining the shore, naturally, but not as many as I had expected. It was a beautiful, calm morning, but I didn't stick around for long after the light started to make it's way down the peaks.
Afterwards I drove over Independence, and to echo other statements, the east side is looking very nice.
Over Cottonwood I didn't find much at all. Certainly the few areas that had been looking good recently are now starting the downward turn. Of course, it's still a gorgeous drive and worth the effort with or without solid colors.
Into CB and most of the trees are still holding their leaves, but the colors are muted and dull. Not what I was hoping to see.
Up onto Kebler and the disappointment continued. Most of the trees are just now starting to turn, but again, those colors are muted and dull. Many trees are just browning up and dropping. As I drove along I was stunned by the number of lime green leaves with dark brown spots showing. The Dyke, however, is showing a few patches of vibrant reds and oranges. There are certainly patches of color that are quite nice, but as a whole, the area looks pretty rough. By the way, the road is not nearly as smooth as it has been in recent years. Lots of potholes and washboards.
I set up at Lost Lake Slough with the intent of taking a nap, shooting sunset at the Dyke, and sunrise at the Slough. But I didn't get to do any of those as an emergency arose at home that I needed to attend to. So, sorry about the lack of visuals here.
From what I saw at Kebler, I think the snow and cold is ruining what was already probably going to be a mediocre year anyway. That's just my opinion, of course.

I really don't think the snow and cold is what's happening to the aspens this year. I think we were destined for a pretty dismal autumn, no matter what the weather did. I suspect that something that happened well before our recent winter weather spate sealed the fate of this season.

you're probably right Todd. I guess what I meant to say was that the snow and cold is further solidifying an already below average year.

Wow Todd,
That's very prophetic!
Can you elaborate on why the weather was not the only reason for the poor showing or color?
Past experiences?
