Well, I pre-ordered the new Epson 3800. They don't ship until November/December and I'll probably be lucky if I get mine in the first round of shipments, but I went for it anyway. When it arrives, I'd be happy to give everyone a report on its performance.
I took several things into consideration. I haven't upgraded my printer since I got a 2200. I saw the pros as: Price $1295, K3 Inks, Auto black switching between photo and matte, 30% smaller than the 4800, prints up to 17x37 (documentation says 17x22, but aparenlty the driver will allow you to print up to 37" long, I don't do many panos, so not a big deal, but I do like being able to make 16x24s), 16x20 borderless printing sheet fed, improvements to print head and printing technology (I suppose yet to be seen for sure but claimed by Epson).
The cons that jumped out at me is there is no option for roll fed paper, and the ink cartridges are only 80ml with no option for higher capacity. Those are really the only two negatives, as far as I was concerned (other people may see more cons than I).
I don't particularly care for roll fed paper, at least in my experince with them. I prefer cut sheets. I'm keeping my 2200 for smaller jobs or personal printing (the upcoming daughter).
I feel this will be a pretty good printer for me. I'll let you know when it comes in and share the info (unless someone gets one before me).
Anyway, I thought I'd share what I was up to.

Sounds like a great purchase. I am jealous as well. Perhaps if I can get out of my TTLImages credit card debt, I will have to make this purchase.
