Can anyone identify this tree for me? The tree has small berries on it that this young bear was trying to get to. They appear to be a little redish in color, but it was taken 4 years ago so I don't really recall and the small aperture hasn't really left me one in focus to help identify it. I'm hoping the bark is enough for identification.
Second question. Where has Jerry been?
Thanks for the help and enjoy the fall season

Two things that will help in the ID:
Where is this at?
Are berries in clusters or singles?
Looking at the bark on the limb the bear is on, I would say it was a black cherry. It is just very unusual that the fruit last until the leaves fall off.
Two other more likely options are Winterberry and Possumhaw. They hold their fruit into winter, but do not grow near the size of a cherry tree.
Hope this helps some....there are just guesses though!!

Darrin, thanks for the suggestions. I suppose I was a little brief in my description. The berries from what I recall were individual berries clustered on a stem. The shot was taken on the road that heads up to Clingmans Dome coming from Gatlinburg. It was also taken in the first week of Nov.
I'll do a search on your suggestions and see if any of them seem to jar my memory.

I'm leaning towards the black cherry. The remaining leaves were oval in shape and I have another image with a little different view that shows the stem looking the similiar to that of a black cherry. If anyone else has other opinions let me know and I'll look them up as well.
Though the berries of the black cherry are darker than I recall I did find a few images that had a slight reddish look to them. For now I'm going with the black cherry. Thanks Darrin

No problem....winter tree ID is tough even when you are standing next to the tree!
