Dave and Micheal's previous post motivated me to go and check this area on Saturday 10/7. While the trees were mostly done, I found it to be a very beautiful area. I got there right as the sun was starting to rise and didn't really know where to go. So I just looked at the sun hitting the cliffs and snapped off a few pictures. Here is one of them:

There were some decent cascades and streams right off the road. I was very amazed by the high jagged rock faces which were covered with mountain climbers. It looked liked GoGs on steroids. I can only imagine what it looks like during peak season. The stone faces had many colors and a scrub type brush was still bright red.

Here is one of the many cascades:

Thanks Dave and Micheal for the tips. My 5 year old wanted to climb to the top of one of the rock faces :jump:

Derek,

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the canyon in spite of the bare trees. You may consider a follow up after a fresh snow. The first image is very dark on my monitor. The cascade is nice - a couple of tips: shoot before the sun is hitting the water directly, or when it's cloudy, use a polarizer to remove glare from the water and wet rocks, and compose to make the most attractive part of the cascade the focal point.

Good luck!

It's nice to see you do the "What If" thing! Really nice! I side with Dave's remarks as well!

Yes,

I definately want to get back there with snow on the ground or possibly during summer wildflower season, fall, etc... I also want to check out the Mesa Trail below the canyon which Michael recommended. It looks dry when driving by it, but Michael's photos tell a different story.

Dave, I know what you mean about focusing in on the cascade. I guess I was trying to capture more of the background that day for future reference - Like what if these trees were still covered with fall leaves, etc... And I always use a polarizer to cut glare. But I do like to shoot waterfalls when the sun is hitting them.

I have a 6 stop ND filter which when combined with a CP allows me to shoot time lapse photos any time of the day. This particular day there was a slight rainbow effect from the sun hitting one of the falls. I tried to capture that as well but it was a little too faint.

Here is another one from where the rainbow was visible to eye:

The only thing I don't like is the big rock in the upper middle of the frame, which I agree could use more isolation.
