Dunderberg Meadow
Until this year, monitoring the CalPhoto list, I never even knew this place I've driven by and admired so many times had a name. I only hope this is in fact Dunderberg.... This was the state of affairs when I passed by on Friday the 6th.

Is this north of Mono Lake?

Very dramatic landscape. You should post this to the Calphoto mailgroup. I bet they'd love this shot

Yes Richard, north of Mono Lake, just north of Conway Summit.

Hi John,

That area north of Conway doesn't have a USGS name:
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.0975&lon=-119.18001&size=l&u=4&datum=nad27&layer=DRG

Inyo National Forest calls it "Conway Summit Area of Critical Environmental Concern. The US395 scenic pullout along that section is probably the most stopped at location for viewing aspen groves in the Eastern Sierra as it is a fine scene receeding into the distance with bands of aspen towards the rusty peaks. For decades was just more cattle grazing ranch lands but apparently those folks have left and the area has been fortunately put into the public domain. Local ranchers do however still graze cattle there. Like many of such ranch areas, the stream was diverted with channels to better water across the meadows which obviously expanded the grove areas over the decades. Virginia Creek flows through there and it does have beavers. The twin peak in the background is Dunderberg Peak. From right of the peak is a shallow drainage where smallish Dunderberg Creek flows north which can be accessed by the signed gravel road that junctions just before reaching the the Virginia Lakes area. There are aspens along the stream and on hillsides of that area. The area just above the junction with a rough dirt road labeled 8228T below is what I've always thought referred to Dunderberg meadow along that creek.

I took a couple images with my view camera there last week two, one during a major snow thunderstorm on Friday afternoon that has not yet been developed. ...David

WOW, Congrat!! You nailed it!!!! :jump:
Yeah, I have gone n on the Virginia Lakes Road and then trun North on the Dunderberg Road
and came out on 395 at what I think is called Green Creek or Road?? a bit further north .....
Oh well...guess there's always next year....
I guess I'll have to go a littel earlier.
It would be helpfull if you installed that Conway summit webcam
for us and pointed it towards that area
I got in on this group late this year...
maybe we can plan an outing for next year??
Thanks for sharing your bounty !!!

In gratitude,
Nelcha

Hi All!

While on my way home from Lone Pine on Tuesday (10/17) there was still some very nice color here. I also saw some nice color between Conway Summit and Lee Vining. I thought about stopping, but a fierce wind was up and the clouds were lowering, so I continued north to Sonora Pass since I wanted to get over before it closed again. (It didn't close, fortunately, but this time of year I don't linger when a front is moving through). Also, there was still some very nice color between Leavitt Meadows and the summit of Sonora Pass.

If you are thinking of going up high; go soon. Winter is coming!

I had a grand time on the East Side and it was a great pleasure to meet Jack, David, Paul, Youssef and RW over there!

If you haven't checked out Big Pine Creek for nice fall color; do so next year! It is a hidden jewel, nestled among the peaks of the Palisade group.

I hope all of you are well and having a nice fall season!
