I find this fascinating because the top half area devoted to leaves and limbs draws me to loosen and relax the physical apparatus of seeing and the mental apparatus of interpretation. It induces a nonliteral view, which is pleasurable. The area viewed becomes pointillist. The mind is capable of reconstituting the scene into recognized objects but finds it preferable to regard the image as a number of floating points of colored light. In this view the scene pulses with a warmth and rhythm of shape that can later be recognized in less vivid form when the same scene is viewed as a composition of known physical objects.
This touches on something I'm coming to recognize, that many of my favorite images have a quality I call "shimmer(ing)," by which I mean that (1) they invite the eye to move to different places within the image, and (2) they are arguably best seen in this relaxed, abstract, pointillist way.
Is anyone else fascinated with this way of seeing things? Anyone else thinking about this stuff? FWIW I'd describe the the leafy area of this image in that way, including the far right border area with its (relatively) distant background of conifers.
Oh and also it's beautifully composed IMHO of course, with the (presumably) CCC stonework (patina and fallen leaves and all) wonderfully balancing the scene.
