Went to Bushy Park with fellow member Colin yesterday to get some action shots of the males fighting. Alas it wasn't to be with only one fight happening after the sun had gone down. At the end of the afternoon we were presented with a lovely scene of several deer sitting by a tree with the setting sun right behind them, so after many attempts at capturing the sunset and the deer in one frame I managed to end up with this which I quite liked.
D200 with 200-400 VR, 1/2000 second, F5.6, ISO 200 (I should have dropped down to 100)

Hi Richard
Great shot - given the BG I think your tight crop works well!

I've been back and forwards from this one since you've posted it and I still can't make up my mind on it at all.
Sometimes I think it's way too tight and awkward to sit kindly in front of me and at others I think it's quite appealing.
I like the stepped background and I like the position of the sun. Looks like the whole shot could have been improved by turning the camera 90 deg and pulling out on the zoom to include more of the deer at the base.
John, the deer was actually sitting in grass (quite long grass actually, its just hidden in the shadow in this shot) so there is no more body that could have been included unfortunately.

Hi Richard
I was also a bit in two minds about this shot, I think mainly due to the slightly awkward (to my eyes) position of the deer in the frame and the fact it is looking out of the frame.
However the overall effect of the deer silhouette, the sun, and the orange sunset colours, all contribute to make the end result work very well. I like it.
cheers
Sean
