I have a new Rebel XT1 camera which I feel I need to buy a spare battery or two. Has anyone purchased batteries other than from the camera manufacturer? I looked at the price of a new Canon NB-2LH battery and nearly fell over when I saw the $70.00 tag. However, I don't know enough about batteries to know whether it is safe to buy one from just the ordinary camera battery dealer even tho some of them are nearly 1/2 the price.

Check out SterlingTek.com. They make Canon replacement batteries, and I buy them two at a time for my 20D at about $30 per pair, including shipping. Yes, no typo. And they're longer-lasting than the Canon batteries and have caused absolutely no problems for me in a year and a half of use. I don't know if they're making the NB
-2LH series replacements, but if it's the same battery the original XT uses, you should be able to find that model on their Web site.

Many thanks for the tip on SterlingTek. I called and yes they do have the battery and for that price who can refuse.
