Hey all,
I was curious as to what sizes everyone printed their prints in. With my 8 mp camera I generally print 8 x 12 prints at 288 pixels/inch. I have heard people printing larger sizes at this many mega pixles, but my prints seem to go down noticably in sharpness past 8 x 12s. I think it may be the sharpening techniques I use. Either that or I am to analytical of prints - afterall the casual observer (or buyer) isnt going to look at them from a couple inches away, and probably will appreciate the larger size more. Thanks guys!

With my 20D I didn't really have a problem printing 12x18 regularly, they came out of camera at 10x15, which look great also. If there is not a huge amount of detail I could even go to 20x30. I'd work on the processing to get better results maybe....?

It all depends on the photo. I have a real nice shot that I took with a 6mp camera that I can only print to 13x19 before it falls apart. Another photo from the same camera looks great at 17x25. I've had 20x30's that look like crap from my 12mp D2x but when I reworked them they looked fine.
I had someone stick their nose into one of my photos the other day and say "oh, yeah, you can tell." I don't know what they could tell but the photo is stunning and I've sold it, and am proud of it, a dozen times.
It's all up to you and the photo.

Okay thanks for the replies guys - that is good information, and it sounds like I should be printing bigger.

I have printed my D2H (4mp) prints up to 18x42 (just wasting ink) and they looked great. I have attached a table (see middle of page of linke below) that I often use for reference that might help:
The above link discusses ppi vs dpi, viewing distance, etc.....all fold into making a good print.

The rule of thumb I use is 240 ppi is the limit for detail unless it is a scene with min detail such as smooth skies or FG's.
I also find each person has different thesholds to quality and what service they are favor :)

my largest print so far from my 6mp DRebel, is a 16x20 at 360dpi, that Mark H printed for me. It came out great, and could probably go another 4 inches if viewed from 3 or 4 feet away. Marie is still nagging me to get it hung on the fireplace
