I recently got the chance to photograph this beautiful mammal under controlled conditions, to photograph them in the wild is near impossible so really it was my only option. I used 3 flash guns to make the lighting look natural, one was from behind to show the lovely texture on his fur and two from a forward position.

Really lovely shot, not sure if another flashgun on the back would have worked better but the mouse stands out well as is,must be a privilage to manage to shoot these shy creatures

Excellent shot Danny. Are you using your Bowens for this?

Hello John
No I used my metz CT4 flashguns which to be honest was because I couldn't fit the bowens in the room I was working in but I was really impressed with the results of the metz. The one positioned towards the back was set to F5.6 and the two for the frontal lighting was F8 with one of them lower down near the camera and one slightly raised about three feet away. I always struggled with lighting in these situations but with digital you can see where you are going wrong and adjust accordingly.
superb work danny. composition is an absolute belter. admire your knowledge of controlled lighting too. superb. would make an interesting article in a magazine on how you set all this up.

Danny, the background is just a little too dark for my taste but other than that I love it.

Hi Danny
Nice shot and I think your lighting and BG are spot on for a nocturnal species!

Hi Danny
I echo the above comments, a well composed and very well lit shot, it works for me. I like the fun element of the shot with the dormouse hanging down on the berries, it makes the shot very engaging and appealing.
The background is dark but for a nocturnal species this makes sense to me and works well.
