I'm growing to like this land photography thing. I went off it quite a few years ago and got heavily into underwater work. Now I'm getting back into the land stuff so am interested in what you guys think.
Techs: Nikon D2X, 600mm f/4 at about 1/500th (can't remember)
It was taken off the Essex coast near Walton on the Naze

Gavin, I'd say consider your framing. The partial bird in the background grabs my eye and the wing tip on the subject is clipped. Put yours fingers over the partial bird on the screen and the image has far more power.

Thanks john
I agree with the framing issue. In fact I was tempted to photoshop the other bird out, but figured I'd learn more by putting the unaltered file on here. It was taken from a rocking boat, so I'm amazed I got it so well framed anyway. lol.
Ah so it is not really land photography , I would certainly get rid of the partial bird, you may with care be able to add a bit of canvas to the top and replicate the missing wing tip. A great pose from the bird and an image that I'm sure has potential, and brave of you to post an unaltered version.
Sorry I missed your name in the WPOY thread, knew there was another name I recognised.

I'm with the others; great action shot and I could live with the clipped wing if the partial bird was not there.
Love the birds pose but the clipped wing and cropped bird in the background make this a 'not quite' image,IMHO.
Great excuse to visit the location again though
