I've driven about 1500 miles this fall with very little to show for it in photos, but I have spent many beautiful days in the woods, so it certainly hasn't been time wasted. I got to Haw Creek Campground just before sunrise on Sunday, which meant a REALLY early morning, 3AM with the time change. The fog lifted quickly, and the rest of the day was bright and sunny, but I finally got some fall color to show for my efforts.

I feel your pain Dominic... good light has been short-lived this fall. And when we've had it, I wasn't able to get out. But it looks like you were able to take advantage of some nice early morning light - this is a wonderful shot! I might have been tempted to use a little longer lens to eliminate some of the white sky, and to emphasize the beautiful color of the trees. Although you've shown some nice detail in the outcrop, I feel that it competes too much with the falls.
Let's hope the weather's more cooperative for the peak down in the Ouachitas...Thanks for posting.

What a beautiful place! I see that Tim E posted a shot from here in his journal. I really like the waterfall itself and the protruding shelf at the right backed by the fall colors. I would have been tempted to focus more on those elements and (while including it) minimize the dominent rock outcrop on the left, possibly down to the point where the sky was eliminated too.
I'm still jealous of you guys, with access to places such as this! Thanks for sharing!
Since I was working against time with the fog burning off, I was going for as many different comps as I could. Here's another that isolates the color more but with a different vantage point. Thanks for the comments on the other one. I thought the outcrop might be a little too dominant.

Nice Dominic I like both of them but I think the second one says FALL louder.

I really, really like the second one Dominic - beautiful color and a nice view of the falls without the outcrop dominating so much. And I'm so glad that you didn't place any leaves in the fg, as I see so often on the big board. Even non-photographers really pick-up on that, and they generally don't like it, especially those that spend a lot of time in the woods. This one really sings - great job!

Much better Dominic, I really like this one! I get to enjoy the stairstepped falls and nice fall color and you captured the flow perfectly IMO. Again, this is a beautiful place.
Not being familiar with this place, do I notice that the water flows into this lower fall from two different directions?
